Tier-Rack Blog

Tier-Rack Corporation has been a leader in rack solutions and flexible warehouse racking systems for fifty years. The original Tier-Rack® pallet stacking frame converts regular warehouse pallets into sturdy storage racks in seconds without screws or bolts. And the Load-Nester® all-steel storage rack features light and heavy duty models of solid all-welded, knock-down, or nestable designs for all your material handling needs.

Use Portable Stacking Distribution Center Racks

In the distribution center, Tier-Rack portable stacking DC racks save space, time and money. Since our distribution center racks are portable, they can be easily moved to allow you to reconfigure your storage space anytime your needs change. A number of warehouse distribution center managers have said that they were skeptical about portable DC racking at first, but that once they tried our stack racks they became sold on the concept and would never use anything else.

How does our DC rack benefit our customers? One advantage mentioned is the ability of Tier-Rack® stacking racks to bulk store items. For seasonal merchandise that needs to be stored for a few months, the ability to fill an area with racks stacked up to five racks high and with few (or no) aisles means that a tremendous amount of product can be stored in a small amount of space. Another advantage of using Tier-Rack® portable racks is the ability to load incoming product directly on the stack racks. Once loaded, the distribution center racks can be moved by forklift trucks to the storage area and stacked for storage. This saves manpower and handling time, and often reduces the need for wooden pallets in the operation.

Tier-Rack stacking racks are designed to meet the specifications of your distribution facilities. Whether you are storing items that weigh 1,000 pounds per pallet position or 6,000 pounds per pallet position, we will engineer a rack that will safely hold your load. Your handling needs are also considered during the design phase. Do you need to pick up the racks from all four sides, or just from the front and back? Do you need decking on the rack, or will you be loading only full pallet loads into the rack? Will you need more than one post height, or are all of your loads of a uniform height? Your answers to these and other questions will help us provide a rack that will meet your operational needs for years to come in your logistics center.

In some instances, additional labor savings can be realized by moving two loaded distribution center racks at the same time. Please be sure to let us know if you wish to carry two loaded stack racks at the same time so we can engineer the racks to safely handle the additional live load.

Let us show you how our years of manufacturing experience can provide you with quality distribution center racks at a very affordable price. We buy steel tubing directly from the tube mills in truckload quantities. Then our talented and efficient teams in our low overhead production facilities transform the steel tubing into high quality portable racks that have been designed to meet your needs. Give us a chance to prove to you that nobody does it better than Tier-Rack! Whether you need 100,000 racks or 10 racks, Tier-Rack is your best choice for stacking distribution center racks.

How Do You Select Your Warehouse Racks

CantileverPicture5

Tier-Rack Corp wants to make sure that whatever you sell, you have the right warehouse rack for it.  We have specialized racks that fit any kind of product, and we can help you design anything that you may need in the future.  Storage racks are our business and we want to make your warehouse as efficient and profitable as possible.  Here are a few thoughts on how to select your warehouse racks and design your storage to make your business thrive!

How is your warehouse setup?

You need to make sure that your warehouse is setup for success.  Finding ways for your most needed products to be closest to you, and most accessible, is the path to success.  So, take this into account when you buy your racks.  Do you have constant updates to your inventory?  Are you always required to re-arrange your products?  Stack Racks can make your life easier.  If you have one product that you need to sell more of than another, you can use more permanent shelving.  If you sell small items, save money with bags and baskets that can easily be moved by forklift.

What are you working with?

Check your current setup.  What can you repurpose or reorganize?  How can you turn your current setup, with some additional racks, into the warehouse of your dreams?  If you have storage racks, can they be reconfigured to a more efficient configuration?  If not, let us take a look and we can help you design the warehouse that will keep you profitable.

How much can you spend?

This isn’t a sales question.  It’s a question of ability.  If you have the budget to buy new racks when the need arises, that’s one thing.  You’re an extremely lucky warehouse owner.  Most of us have to make do with one setup.  Organizing what you have and occasionally augmenting with new or used storage racks is the best solution for the problem of warehouse organization.

If you are ready to reorganize your warehouse, you can call Tier-Rack at 800-325-7869 or visit www.tier-rack.com today to start the process.  Make your warehouse the most efficient one in your industry with Tier-Rack!

3 Principles of Warehouse Management

stacking5high

When a warehouse runs correctly, it manages three tasks well.  A warehouse is designed to operate as an extension of the business.  The health of the company is built on the back of these 3 principles of warehouse operation:
1.    Move products
2.    Know what you have
3.    Keep the place in order
Move Products
Your warehouse exists primarily to facilitate products moving in and out of your inventory.  It needs to get your products from place to place, at its core.  When your sales team makes sales, you have to be able to fulfil orders, or you won’t sell anything else.  There’s a direct connection between ability to move products and profitability.
Know What You Have
A solid warehouse keeps products in the right place and knows what they have.  Making sure that your products are at the front of the shelves and out of the way are hugely important to the long-term health of your shop.  This has multiple uses, from knowing what NOT to sell when you’re short, to making sure that you move products that you have overstock on when that time comes.  Knowing your stock makes all the difference.
Keep The Place In Order
Your warehouse informs the rest of the business.  When you don’t have control over supply, it messes up the rest of the operation.  You can be sure that without the support of the warehouse, nothing happens.  That said, your warehouse manager is your leader in the quest to keep your business in order.  They are the keepers of the inventory and inventory management system.
Warehouse management isn’t just the people though.  The actual physical makeup of the warehouse is huge as well.  Using Stack Racks, a Tier-Rack invention, help you organize your warehouse to keep it efficient, and lets you re-organize the stacks on the fly without having to take product off the shelves.
Call Tier-Rack today at 800-325-7869 and visit www.tier-rack.com to order racks or find a storage solution for your business.  Don’t spend another day with an unorganized warehouse.

Get Your Warehouse Ready For Winter

Xstackingducts

As the seasons turn, the challenges for your warehouse change with them.  Gone are the long days and high temperatures of summer, and the early dark and freezing temps of winter are closer than they appear.  When you run a warehouse, it's imperative that you stay ahead of the curve on the weather.  Here's some tips for getting your warehouse ready for the winter.

Shut The Doors

The huge open doors that every warehouse needs are a liability when it comes to maintaining the health and comfort of your employees in the warehouse.  They do a great job of letting you get your stock in and out, but they also do a great job of letting the heat out and bringing in cold air.  It's vital to ensure that the doors are equipped with large plastic strips to help keep that warm air from escaping.
They're easy to install and will save you money on heating, along with maintaining a consistent temperature.  Also, get your employees into the habit of closing these doors whenever possible.

Control The Flow
Even if you have perfectly placed heaters running full blast, you can still run into air flow issues.  Making the hot air in your warehouse run entirely in the direction that you want it to go may involve moving some racks.  If you have Tier-Rack Stack Racks, they're easy to move around the warehouse to maximize airflow.  If your racks are difficult to move, you may want to consider replacing them with more mobile racks, or wire frame racks that allow for better airflow.
This will help your warehouse stay warmer throughout the season.

More POWER
If these tips haven't fixed your heating issue, consider adding more heat.  It's not just giant industrial heaters that do the trick, though.  Walk the warehouse.  Find the coldest places and pick up portable heaters for your employees.  We've talked to companies that have made their employees BUY their own heaters.  Frankly, a cold warehouse is YOUR fault.  Don't compound the error by making your employees fix this themselves.
Also, look for areas that may not be covered, cracked windows, uninsulated areas, and fix them.  You'll be glad when the heating and a/c bills come.

Hopefully we've helped you with some tips to keep the warehouse warm this winter that you can implement NOW and get a head start.  If you're interested in transforming your warehouse more substantially, Tier-Rack can help! Tragedy Reminds Us That Shelving Rack Safety is Important

millwork2

After one person was killed and up to seven others were hurt after a shelving rack collapsed at a food warehouse in northern Virginia, many companies have started to seriously rework their warehouse policies and equipment.  The 30-foot-high, 150-foot-long shelving unit collapsed Reinhart Foodservice near Manassas.

This tragedy shakes up the warehousing industry and underscores the importance of not overstacking racks, and buying the highest quality racks available for your warehouse.  Overstacking a rack is dangerous. whether it's for tires, general goods, giant coils, grains, or whatever, there's a weight limit that your rack was built to specifications for.  This weight limit, however, isn't always easy for warehouse managers to convey to their employees, regarsless of how important it is to warehouse safety.  There may be a missing link in the chain of information, where the manager creates a sign which is covered by something else, or the lessons get lost in the shuffle of employee turnover.  However, this important lesson needs to be imparted at every level, as no company can afford for their inventory to crash to the floor.

Overstacking isn't the only problem though.  Racks can be weakened by collisions with forklifts, by improper stacking, by being in improper configurations or environments, or they may arrive in an unsatisfactory condition.  This last one, however, is one that Tier-Rack Corp can fix.  Every rack manufactured by Tier-Rack Corporation meets their highest safety and manufacturing specs, and are manufactured here, in the United States, of the finest metals and techniques at their manufacturing factories.

Tier-Rack Corporation has been a leader in rack solutions and flexible warehouse racking systems for almost sixty years. Our portable stacking racks and rack systems are designed to handle and store even the most fragile, odd-shaped, and awkward merchandise. They can be designed to transport two loads at a time. Our stack racks reduce handling time, stack four to six high, and they are capable of supporting thousands of pounds per unit load. All Tier-Rack racks are engineered with a "2-to-1" safety factor to ensure the racks will perform safely and last for decades.  For more information, visit www.tier-rack.com today.

Keep Your Warehouse Safe With Tier-Rack' Warehouse Rules

FACTORYRACKING1

Here at Tier-Rack, we don't just sell and manufacture racks.  We try to be a resource for businesses to use in order to maintain their stock effectively, and build an awesome operation.  We are there from the beginning to the end of the sale, making sure that you get the rack that you ordered AND it fits your warehouse and its needs.  Your warehouse and distribution center deserves the best, so we wanted to share a list of rules that we've developed over the years, from talking to various warehouse managers and operators, to keep a safe warehouse.

Always maintain a clean warehouse

This means floors, aisles, shelves, whatever.  Take the time to ensure that your warehouse walkways and storage areas are free from clutter that can cause accidents, and don't have potential spill areas for slip and falls.  Ensure that cables are covered.  Don't assume that people will always see cables stretched across the floor or walkways.  Just make sure that you keep your areas clean of debris and you'll have a safer warehouse.  Make sure that your team is involved too - they should be accountable for cleanliness as much, if not more, than you are.

Pace yourselves

Running in a warehouse or working yourselves to the point of exhaustion are both false hustle mistakes.  There's no reason to run or work tired.  They can wait on their tire for the 2 minutes it takes to walk, and your manager needs to schedule you for breaks.  Try not to foster an environment where your employees' comfort is a distant second to the customer's happiness.  It creates a workplace of tired, resentful employees that don't feel like you value their health.

Make sure that the warehouse is always well ventilated

Keeping airflow during the summer and heat in the winter can mean the difference between a safe worker and a costly sickness or injury.  A well-ventilated warehouse is a healthy warehouse.  When you buy your racks, make sure that they're mobile enough to move if they block airflow or make the place seem stuffy.  Make the warehouse an airy, easy place to work and you'll get better production.

These are just a few examples of how a little pre-planning can help solve the major problems of warehouse work.  Ensuring warehouse safety means that everyone can work effectively and efficiently.  This will make your business more profitable and a better place to work. To order Tier-Rack racks for your warehouse or distribution center and become part of the family, call us today at 800-325-7869 or visit us online at www.tier-rack.com  today.  Nobody makes a better rack for YOUR warehouse than Tier-Rack.
