A lot has been said and written about Fort Knox, the world-renowned military installation located in the state of Kentucky that holds the vast majority of the United States' gold reserves. However, not much is known with certainty since the place has been closely guarded since its foundation in 1936.

Nevertheless, everyone once in a while a few details will pop up and add to the fort's everlasting popular public appeal. In that regard, today we present you with 5 little known facts about the legendary Fort Knox.

Only One President Has Been Allowed To Visit

The only POTUS who has ever set foot inside Fort Knox was Franklin Roosevelt. In 1943, towards the end of the Second World War, President Roosevelt was unsure that Fort Knox would be able to hold off an enemy attack if we were unlucky enough to suffer an invasion. This was the first and only time a President of the United States has been able to visit.

It's Not Really Called Fort Knox

The world-famous vault is popularly referred to as Fort Knox because it sits inside an Army base called Fort Knox. However, when most people talk about Fort Knox they are actually referring to the United States Bullion Depository which is protected by the United States Mint Police.

During World War II It Stored More Than Gold

As a direct result of the Second World War, the vault was used to store 1 of 4 existing copies of the Magna Carta, the United States Constitution, and the Declaration Of Independence. These documents are no longer found in the famed vault, but it is important to note that at one point the vault held irreplaceable items worth more than all the tons of gold inside.

The Fort Knox Vault Is More Secure Than You Think

First of all, the gold is not even stored inside the building known as Fort Knox. Rather, the actual vault is part of a large underground facility that was built out of reinforced steel plates lined with huge slabs of North Carolina granite stone. Besides the direct employees and guards, no one is allowed inside. As a matter of fact, the gold itself is never allowed out of the vault, except for very small amounts used to conduct audits. The door to the vault, which is completely drill and torch proof, is 21 inches thick and weighs over 18 metric tons. Finally, the perimeter is lined with high-resolution cameras, microphones, razor wire, and even minefields.
